Knockout Stage Scenarios: Monday 3/6

by Joe Meyer

Math is hard. We’re here to help!

With three groups in action tonight (3/6), we’re breaking down exactly what each side needs to do to qualify for the knockout stage!

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

The top two clubs from each group advance to the knockout stage, while the remaining entrants will be placed in the Challenge Cup, a knockout competition modeled after the UEFA Europa League.

Additionally, in Division II, the top two third-place finishers advance to the Knockout Stage as "Wild Cards". There are no Wild Card berths in the Premier Division.

TONIGHT'S SCHEDULE

9:00 ET - Providence City FC vs. Dynamo FC - St. Cloud

9:30 ET - Providence City FC vs. Grays Harbor Gulls FC

9:30 ET - Bateaux FC vs. the Crocketteers

10:00 ET - Minneapolis City vs. La Barra 608

10:00 ET - SPAM FC vs. Peak XI FC

10:00 ET - Dynamo FC - St. Cloud vs. Grays Harbor Gulls FC

Group A

Duluth FC has already clinched Group A after winning all three group stage matches.

The winner of tonight’s match between Minneapolis City SC and La Barra 608 will advance to the knockout stage as the group runner-up. If the match ends in a draw, Minneapolis City will advance on goal difference.

The South Bend Lions have been eliminated.

Group B

The Crocketteers have already clinched a top-two finish and knockout stage berth, and will finish first in the group with a win or draw.

Bateaux FC can win the group with a win tonight over the Crocketteers, or clinch a knockout stage berth with a draw. Bateaux can also advance with a loss if the San Antonio Runners draw or lose later this week, or if San Antonio loses, but Bateaux maintains a higher goal difference.

San Antonio Runners SC can advance to the knockout stage with a win on Wednesday night over Laguna United, a Bateaux loss, and by finishing with a better goal difference than Bateaux.

Group C

With four matches left to play in Group C on the final matchday (following two postponements earlier in the tournament), all five clubs in the group remain in contention for a knockout stage berth.

Providence City FC and Dynamo FC - St. Cloud are the only two clubs that control their own destiny, as either side would advance by winning both of their matches today. Grays Harbor Gulls FC, Peak XI FC, and SPAM FC must produce a result of their own and wait for results elsewhere to see if they’ll finish in the top two of the group.
