Bateaux FC Claims 2022 Rocket League Title

by Joe Meyer

On Wednesday night, Bateaux FC captured the 2022 Lower League eCup - Rocket League Division Title with a two-game sweep of Oakland County FC

The Championship match was a group stage rematch between Bateaux’s Tarek Kaakani and Oakland County’s Theo Foutris. Top-seeded Oakland County took the group stage match two games to one (8-4, 6-8, 8-4), en route to a perfect group stage record, while the loss Kaakani’s first and only loss of the tournament.

Game One (Bateaux 6, Oakland County 1)

After a scoreless three minutes, Kaakani opened the scoring with just over two minutes to play. From there, the floodgates opened for Kaakani, who scored five more goals in a 90 second span to give Bateaux a 6-0 lead over Oakland County. Foutris finally got on the board with three seconds remaining, but the goal was little more than consolation as Kaakani and Bateaux took Game One by a final score of 6-1.

Game Two (Bateaux 10, Oakland County 5)

Kaakani followed his dominant performance in Game One by racing out to an early 5-1 lead in Game Two. Just when the Championship Match seemed all but a formality, Foutris stormed back with three unanswered goals to bring the match within one goal. Foutris would once again bring Oakland County within one goal at 6-5, before Kaakani responded with four answered goals to seal the title for Bateaux FC.

Bateaux’s title marks just the second time in eCup history a club from a local or state league has claimed an eCup title. They join 2020 Xbox Division Champions, the Oly Town Artesians, who have since joined USL League Two.
