Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Lower League eCup a professional gaming event?

No, the Lower League eCup is a tournament that strives to connect American soccer supporters and clubs through a unique medium. Here at the Lower League eCup, we focus on the casual soccer fan rather than professional gamers. eCup players are supporters, players, or staff members at lower league clubs, and paying a player to represent your club is prohibited and will lead to automatic disqualification.

When will the tournament take place?

The 2021 tournament will begin with the group stage mid-January, and will conclude with the knockout stage in February.

What is the tournament format?

Players and clubs are divided into groups of four, playing three group stage matches. After the group stage the top 2-3 players from each group advancing to the knockout stage/consolation bracket.

Are there multiple skill levels?

Yes! Brand new for 2021 is our yet to be named Second Division! Although our entire tournament is oriented towards the average soccer fan, our second division is specifically for fans who want to get in on the action, but don't have much FIFA experience, or won't be representing their clubs in the tournament. In addition, players will not need to represent a club to be eligible for the second division, and there can be multiple entries from supporters of the same club.

We want to provide a platform that allows supporters of lower league soccer from across the country to connect with each other, form new relationships, and learn about different clubs!

What console(s) are available?

There are three separate divisions on Playstation, Xbox, and PC. Each club and supporters group can have an entry on each console, but doesn't have to enter all 3 competitions.

How many clubs are represented?

In 2020, 120 clubs and supporters groups were represented in the tournament. We had 153 entries across three divisions (Playstation, Xbox, PC), and just under 200 players participated in the event.

Who can participate?

eCup participation is open to supporters, players, and staff members at lower league clubs. Clubs can either enter directly, or get permission from a club to represent the club in the tournament. Paying a player to represent your club is prohibited and will lead to automatic disqualification.

Will the matches be streamed?

Yes, every match is streamed on the gaming platform Twitch. Clubs are responsible for streaming their own matches, and the eCup will re-broadcast these streams on our primary channel (twitch.tv/lowerleagueEcup).
